I have lived in Burien for 13 years. In the last few, I have seen wonderful improvements in many facets of community life. I've been thrilled with the renovation of Southwest 152nd Street and the planned Town Square.
The community events are well organized, increasing in number, and participation is excellent. The city newsletter has done an outstanding job of keeping residents up to speed on city projects, events, and opportunities to get involved.
New homes are being built and existing homes remodeled. The sense of community and civic pride has increased dramatically.
The population and size increase brought on by the annexation would be a huge setback. At best, it would take the community years to regain that sense of identity and pride that we now share.
Sudden growth of that magnitude cannot be absorbed without shocking every part of the community and city services. And for what? Would "old" Burien be a better place to live? Safer? Would we have better schools?
The Mayor and City Council are responsible for executing their duties with the best interests of the residents of Burien at heart. Not the interest of King County, Seattle, or the communities to the north.
