Seattle summer swimming season comes to a close

Chasing after Olympic View Swim Club swimmer Chase Onstot was what everyone had to do in the 50 freestyle and 50 backstroke, to no avail, and Matt Jude, hey, what can one say, the guy's singingly poetic in the water, winning three individual events, as a lot of stroking-good action came to and through the swimming lanes of the annual All City Seattle Summer Swim League championships held at the OV pool Aug. 1.
There were 389 swimmers, 16 SSSL teams spanning from Federal Way clubs to North Seattle distances, and there were several good swims from area swimmers from clubs around here- - Gregory Seahurst-Burien, Normandy Park and OV-Normandy Park, and Arbor Heights-White Center.
Onstot took two firsts, winning the 50 back by three seconds, 29 flat to 32.51 for the next closest swimer. Onstot for an encore won the 50 back, that race was a little closer than the 50 free, 33.97 to 34.38.
Onstot had a good season, for the OV team; make that great, A-plus, even though the 10-year-old little guy had a hard time remembering it.
Lost any of your dual meet or Southern Division races was the question.
"I think once," said Onstot, pausing, "Oh, actually, no, I haven't been beat."
He's an honest little guy too, saying what he feels. Asked about setting some all-city records next year, he remembered something about being at the top of the totem pole and the bottom. Next year he remembered he would not be at the top.
"I will be 11 so I don't think it will be so easy," he said, remembering he has to now swim with 12 year olds next year so that makes it difficult, especially at that growing age for boys. But he will likely be close once again, that competitive spirit he has.
He swims year-round, too, for Whitewater Aquatics, so that is good for everyone to know that this sport just does not come easy. If one plans on getting a swimming scholarship for college, being good in high school, it's starts at the bottom ages in order for you to be good at the top.
"He works really hard out there, puts in a lot of time," said his coach Erin Dunn.
So "probably Chase" was the answer for outstanding swimmer of the meet, according to Dunn, and he also mentioned a couple others that did well, Madion Dorhofer, getting third when she was seeded fifth in the 50 breaststroke in a time of 37.01.
Normandy Park's Jude again was unbeatable, winning the 14 and under 50 free in 23.24, two seconds ahead of second place even though that is a fast race where times should be closer than that. He took it to them also in the 100 free in 51.27, again close to three seconds ahead of second place. He also roped in the 50 back in 28.59. That was his closest race, having second place behind him less than a second, 29.30.
"I didn't get a best time but it was fun," said Jude
In the boys 18 and less than 50 breast, Alexander Beyer took first, Garrett Miller, second, and AH's Mason Heckett, third in times of 28:45, 29:22, 29.97, respectively. In the girls 14 and under free relay, Mackenzie Marrs, Sofia Smith, Krista Beyer, Emily Fenster took second in 1:50.09. In the boys 14 and under free relay, OV's Andrew Garrido, Dillon Webster, Jason Lemley, Duncan McCoy won in 1:49.05. In the girls 18 and under free relay, NP's Jessie Couper, Jillian Schneeman, Annie Thomson, Brenda Foster took fifth in 1:49.17. In the boys 18 and under free relay, NP's John Ester, Matt Simpson, Spencer Mennella, Alexander Beyer took fifth in 1:33.72.
