The Northwest Little League Seniors wrapped up a successful season last week after finishing in a three-way tie for second place at the Western Regional Senior Tournament in Salem, Oregon.
Montana then played Hawaii for the tournament championship. Hawaii prevailed and will represent the region at the Little League's Senior Division World Series in Bangor, Maine on August 13-19.
Parent Gwen Babcock said the players were disappointed in the outcome of the Oregon tournament.
Babcock said the team should have defeated Nevada in the first game of the tournament but lost 8-6. "We did not play well. We were tired," said Babcock. "We should have beaten Nevada. We played a terrible game. It was hard on the boys, they wish they could have played Nevada again."
A number of players performed well for NWLL. Nathan Hale junior Steven Dullum pitched a complete game in a 6-4 win over Montana, striking out 14 batters.
Craig Brinkman, a junior at Ballard High pitched a no-hitter to beat Oregon 14-4. Clayton Hevly, one of the team's top hitters and pitchers was lost to a broken wrist on a defensive play in the Montana game.
While the NWLL team did not achieve its goal of winning the tournament they are the Washington State District Eight Tournament Champions.
It has been a long season for the NWLL Seniors after winning six of seven games to win the Washington State title and their own district title.
Six NWLL Seniors averaged over .400 at the plate. They included Kevin Babcock (Ingraham High, junior), Dullum, Hevly, Taylor Rausch (Ballard, sophomore), Nick Tsagalakis (Ballard, junior) and Mitch Wall (Ballard, sophomore).
