Former Kennedy High School football standout Mike Utley is one person who can't be slowed down.
With help from Kennedy, Utley and his foundation preparing to put on the fourth annual DAM2DAM "Thumps Up!" bike tour.
The event, which will span 100 miles along the Columbia River, benefits the Mike Utley Foundation's goal of finding a cure for spinal cord injuries.
"From Kennedy teachers to alumni, they have all given me the opportunity to get the name of my foundation out," Utley said.
Utley, who played football at Kennedy and Washington State University before a professional career as a lineman for the Detroit Lions, lost the use of his legs after an injury during a game in 1991.
Just one month after his life-changing injury, Mike established his foundation. Utley now travels the country providing motivational and emotional support for individuals with spinal cord injuries.
"I chose to be an athlete and a role model. Now I'm trying to do my part as a role model," Utley said.
The DAM2DAM event will help generate money for the foundation to support the research and rehabilitation of spinal cord injuries.
On September 30, riders will take a 25, 50 or 100-mile route along the Columbia. The starting point will be at Lincoln Rock State Park in Wenatchee.
All cyclists are welcome participate. In addition, gold medalist and world record holder Craig Blanchette will offer a hand cycling clinic.
"I've done other tournaments and events like this, but this one is special because it's an event that hand cyclists can take part in," Utley said.
Kennedy, which helps raise money for the foundation, is sending four teams of 25 riders that will raise money for the cause.
Some Kennedy football players who have been inspired by Utley will also be taking part along with the cross-country team.
The rest of these riders are alumni and friends.
"It's important to help because Mike is part of our family," said Jim Mesick, admissions director at Kennedy. "It's a great cause to help with spinal cord research."
Kennedy also opens its track to wheelchair athletes-the only school to do so in the state.
"People come from all over from Bellingham to Olympia to use the track," said Greg Proback, alumni director for Kennedy.
Registration for the bike tour is $75. That includes a jacket, goodie bag and refreshments at rest stops along the ride.
The event will conclude with a Bikers BBQ and prizes for riders who raised donations to benefit the foundation.
