Mount Rainier scored a touchdown, then Tyee, then Mount Rainier scored two and held a 23-6 lead from halftime on until late in a 23-12 victory over the Totems in Seamount League action Thursday.
First year Rams coach Mike Kuklenski said, "We're improving every week. We are 0-2, we had a rough start."
Rams quarterback Craig Robinson's team drew first blood with a score in the first quarter as he hit Justin Champion for 22 yards.
Tyee came back and scored with 1:30 left in the same quarter as quarterback Malcolm Garrison found Caleb Tuanai for an 82-yard bomb to tie things up, 6-6.
"I can't imagine anyone in the league throwing better than that, that kid has an arm," said Kuklenski.
Next the Rams scored on a long 13-play drive eclipsing nearly six minutes, going 81 yards. It was capped by Robinson throwing his second touchdown, a 30-yard bomb easily into the arms of Ezon James. It was a timing play that worked out perfectly.
But was it easy to do it right the first time?
Hardly. In fact, the play just before that Robinson to James TD was the same timing pattern call and the Rams quarterback missed hitting his receiver, James, diving for the ball thrown into the right corner of the end zone.
"We are not afraid to take risks," said Robinson, a 5-9, 170 pound junior for the Rams.
Robinson was a key player in this game, though Garrison's arm surely is easily one of the strongest in the league. Tuani caught over 100 yards passing in the game from Garrison but that was where the highlight reel begins and ends for the Totems.
Others dropped the ball when it was thrown to them for the most part and the running game was nearly non-existent for the black and red.
The Rams were making some of Garrison's throws go off kilter some too. Give credit to players like Rich McKinney, who had a sack or two, and many pressures on Garrison for that. McKinney was clearly all over the gridiron making plays as was Cesar Luna and here's the Rams next touchdown, a pass again to James, a 29-yard connection. It was a throw across the middle and James caught and ran on his own half that 29 yard distance to paydirt. Running back David Lepeska ran in a two-point conversion to stretch the score to 23-6, with that drive taking four plays and going 62 yards in 1:07 elapsed time. Then came the end of the first half 45 seconds later.
No scoring went on in the second half until late in the fourth quarter when it was Garrison finding Tuanai in the end zone with 4:19 left in the game. That was an 11 play drive, going 82 yards in 4:04. That was a sign that Tyee could perhaps, with Garrison's arm and Tuanai's catching talent, and a few others making catches when the ball is thrown to them, still have a successful season.
