Wine tastings flow
Tue, 11/07/2006
There's a wine revolution occurring in the Highline communities of Burien and Des Moines.
Wine tastings, wine pairings and wine dinners are becoming the social events of the week.
Led by Burien's own E.B. Foote Winery and CorkyCellars in Des Moines, such Burien players as Osteria da Primo, Vino Bello, Dino's and The Mark are joining the revolution.
"The wine resurgence can be attributed to the Washington Wine Commission who promotes our state's wines very well," said Sherrill Miller of E.B. Foote Winery (ebfootewinery.com).
"Consumers have taken notice. More and more people are getting interested in wines, especially Washington wines."
E.B. Foote began wine sampling in 1991. They currently offer a complimentary tasting, with snacks, on Tuesday and Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Four times a year, E.B. Foote celebrates with expanded events, welcoming hundreds of wine enthusiasts.
In January and July they open the winery to Breeders Theater, a local professional theater group that performs original comedies written by T.M. Sell.
For $20, each attendee is treated to theater-in-the-square along with wine tasting and hors d'oeuvres.
The plays have increased in popularity and tickets should be bought well in advance as most performances sell out quick.
CorkyCellars (corkycellars.com), owned by Ric and Diane Jacobson, started to sample wine shortly after they opened in 1999. Every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., well over a hundred people usually stop by to enjoy Ric and Diane's hospitality, as well as their complimentary wine tasting.
"Consumers enjoy being able to try before they buy," said Diane.
"Hopefully everyone understands that there are Liquor Control Board guidelines when shops offer tastings. We are restricted on how many ounces we can pour and we cannot pour two samples to the same customer," Ric added.
Last year CorkyCellars partnered with an area caterer, Chef du Jour, to create their version of food and wine pairings. About every six weeks, 20 people enjoy a light Friday night supper and wine in CorkyCellars' sampling room.
Burien newcomer Vino Bello (vinobello.com) is contributing to the wine revolution as well with both public tastings and private parties for their customers.
"Wine tastings at Vino Bello give customers the opportunity to meet producers and distributors that carry low-production, high-quality wines in a warm, upscale and fun atmosphere," said owner Michele Smith.
"Our events are community driven with neighbors from all over the area sharing wine, friendship and stories," said Smith.
Vino Bello wine tastings are Saturdays from 4 to 7 p.m. Check their online calendar for special wine tasting events.
Osteria da Primo's (osteriadaprimo.com) owners Lindsay White and her husband, Carlo Guida, started their popular wine tasting dinners in Burien shortly after they opened in 2005.
Their dinners and wine are themed to a specific region of Italy, or an event like "Carnavale" (Mardi Gras), or in some cases a specific vineyard.
Special five course meals are prepared by Carlo and matched with selected Italian wines.
Usually their wine importer presents each wine to the diners. But their most recent dinner, "Ca'ntele," on Columbus Day featured Italian winemaker Paolo Ca'ntele, of l'AziendaVinicola Ca'ntele, paired with food from the Puglia region of Italy.
This was Paolo's only appearance in the Seattle area. Guests were enthused with his presentation, and wines.
"We at Primo's only serve high quality, low production, estate bottled Italian wines and Italian wine is made to drink with food," said White.
"So we provide a place where our customers can do just that. Eat, drink, enjoy the company of friends and experience a truly Italian dinner."
"We take it slow, five courses over three to four hours," said Chef Guida.
Primo's can seat up to 58 people for the wine dinners. And, when White points out that they fill up quickly, she isn't kidding. Their next dinner "I Grandi Rossi" on Dec. 12, was sold out in three days.
What's next for Primo's wine dinners? Look for two nights of private seatings.
Dino's Greek and Italian Cuisine (dinosgreekanditaliancuisine.com) in Burien/Normandy Park launched their first wine dinner last month, featuring Dino's Italian cuisine and wine from E.B. Foote Winery.
Sherrill Miller presented E.B. Foote wines with five carefully selected courses.
After Dino's new owner, Devinder (Dev) Singh, got to know his customers, Sherrill and Ric Miller, a plan was hatched to use E.B. Foote wines for his very first dinner.
"I have plans to expand Dino's wine list with both Washington and Greek wines. I felt the best way to find out what my customers want is to let them taste the wines in an atmosphere where they could give feedback," said Singh
A happy coincidence for Dino's first pairing is that it also was Sherrill's birthday. She was happy to celebrate with the over 40 people who attended.
Next up for Dino's will be an all-Greek pairing. Food and wine from Greek food distributor Yianni's will be featured. It is planned for late December.
All guests who attended Dino's first pairing have reserved for this special dinner, but Singh explains that "with two seatings we can accommodate a lot more customers."
Joining in on the wine and dinner trend is The Mark restaurant in Burien. They have also teamed with E.B. Foote winery to offer an elegant dining experience.
E.B. Foote paired their wines with the dinner menu from The Mark and their first dinner is Nov. 8.
Customers receive a five-course meal, paired with a different wine on each course.
"We came up with a great dessert/wine pairing to end the evening with style," said Miller.
