In a joint effort to help Highline residents, the Des Moines Enhanced Public Safety Committee, the Des Moines Police and South King Fire and Rescue have published an Emergency Preparedness Check-List booklet.
It is specifically designed for emergency situations the area experienced with a widespread power outage in December.
Wayne Corey, committee co-chairman, said, "People were caught unaware of the severity of the last storm and need to think about future events that might occur."
Des Moines Master Police Officer Dave Hamilton spearheaded the pamphlet's creation.
He heads emergency management for Des Moines police and coordinates emergency planning with various agencies in south King County.
Florence McMullin, a Huntington Park resident and committee co-chairwoman, noted, "Our community formed an emergency action committee and held meetings to address the need for preparedness."
The pamphlet may be used as a guideline for individuals to design for their specific needs in case of an emergency.
The pamphlet is available on-line at http://www.desmoineswa.gov/dept/police/epsc.html.
Pamphlets are also available in Des Moines at police and fire stations, the community/senior center, city hall and the marina office.
