In boys wrestling, the Ballard Beavers went through a rough stretch this month with losses to Redmond 63-9, Inglemoor 66-6 and Woodinville 63-9.
The Beavers, lead by coach Glen Bell, showed promise in a narrow defeat by Juanita 36-29 with a number of wrestlers stepping up to earn the respect of the Rebels.
Sophomore Josh Ochoa won by forfeit in the 112-pound division. He was followed by a solid win by senior Aristeo Cabrera at 119 pounds, sophomore Jorey Taylor's pin at 135 pounds, junior James Webberly's decision in the 145 pounds class and junior Mike Turner's forfeit at 160 pounds.
Robert Mercer, junior, beat his Juanita opponent by a technical fall in the 171-pound division, senior Peter Exner won by a pin in the 189-pound division. Freshman Ken Moore pinned his Woodinville opponent and Oscar Diaz won by decision in a match with the Cougars.
Exner found success against Redmond when Mustang wrestler Josh Brunk had a technical fall. In the 215-pound division, Ballard's Owen Scully, a sophomore, beat Redmond's Esteban Herrera.
Other members of the team this season include: Chris Baguio, Preston Parrish, Krystal Do, Colin Dunphy, Katherine Landerholm, Dylan McKinney, Eli Ross, C. J. Eldred, Roxanna Lazo, Ryan McGill, Thomas Nguyen, Mike Turner, Jacob Fabian and Aaron Norton.
The KingCo League Tournament is Friday and Saturday, Feb. 2 and 3 at Juanita High School. The Region II Wrestling Tournament is Saturday, Feb. 10 at a site to be announced later.
The Mat Classic XVII is Friday and Saturday, Feb. 16 and 17 at the Tacoma Dome.
