The Todd Beamer Titans girls basketball team lost a nail-biter, 50-46, in overtime, to the Kentridge Chargers in a South Puget Sound League tournament loser-out playoff at Rogers High School Friday.
The game was for the ninth and final seed heading into the West Central District playoffs that start Thursday.
"We got to the playoffs," said Tiffany Rutter,Titans head girls basketball coach. "It's a first for our program."
The Titans became the fourth 4A high school in the Federal Way School District back in 2003.
So, it took four years and the Titans girls, and boys, for that matter, made it to the post-season.
But, for this story, it's all about the girls, and, namely the seniors, 5-8 forward Kelli Calvin and 6-0 post Kiara Schaeffer, who both left it all on the floor against the Chargers. Calvin did not score many points, one to be exact, but she was all over the floor and her presence made a difference. She averaged close to 10 points this season per game and the Chargers must have done their homework because they stayed on her well. Schaeffer, on the other hand, could not be denied even with the double teams on her.
Schaeffer saved her best for last. She scored 21 points and hauled down 24 rebounds, a breakdown of 10 in the first half, 11 in the second.
"We could have made some shots at the end of the game," said Calvin.
