In separate actions on Feb. 22, Des Moines City Council members approved a Redondo rezone that addresses substandard lot requirements and unanimously endorsed the Highline School District's replacement levy.
Currently in Redondo there are 154 taxed lots, of which 134 are substandard in size. The rezone will lower to 25 the number of substandard lots there.
Lawmakers adopted the rezone with little discussion following a presentation by staff.
In endorsing the school district's Educational Programs and Operations levy, which will be on the March 13 special election ballot, Councilman Dan Sherman declared, "I plan to make a statement with my vote as a council member to what kind of a community I want to live in.
"I am all for education and it is an important part of our city, even if it is not in our taxing district."
Some of the Highline School District is not in Des Moines, although Mount Rainier High, Pacific Middle and several elementary schools are located there.
Mayor Bob Sheckler also supported the levy despite the taxing district issue.
"When it involves the Highline School District we are talking about our children. I too am making this as an exception more than as a general rule," he said.
The council also voted to enter into an agreement with Destination Des Moines, a non-profit corporation that was organized recently to promote the city.
The city will provide $15,000 to Destination Des Moines this year.
In other business, lawmakers:
Approved a $50,000 contract with ClearPath for real estate and economic development services in the Pacific Ridge neighborhood.
Supported a draft resolution that contributes $7,000 for a July 4 fireworks show over the Des Moines marina.
