Saving Jubilee Days
Tue, 03/20/2007
My name is Larry Winkler. I am a past worthy president of the White Center Eagles. At this time I sit as an outside guard until the end of April. In May I plan to be entertainment chairman and stage a karaoke contest at the Jubilee Days event.
I contacted the Jubilee Days committee in December to book time on the main stage. You can see I was a little ahead of the game so I planted the seed at that time.
Steve Teasley was chairman of entertainment at that time and told me this was something that sounded good to him. Steve also told me to try to attend one of the upcoming Jubilee Days meetings where we could discuss this idea. Things were looking good for my plan. I needed something to highlight this event and thought that it might be worth reaching for the stars.
I did not want a big star so I went for the closest one. That was Pat O'Day. a man with unsurpassed Seafair spirit, I sent him a letter asking him to highlight our event. To my surprise he answered me promptly with great enthusiasm and would do what he could do to help guide me through this, but he needed to be in Pasco for the hydroplane races at the time of our event. Oops, Nice try.
So I tried for the next one who is Dori Monson of 710KIRO. Dori seemed interested but was not sure what his plans are at that time of summer. I think I might need to push this one if I'm going to get Dori to help.
Every thing was sown and waiting for something to happen when Punxsutawney Phil came out to see his shadow and could not find it, making spring come early. True to his word spring arrived early and so hard it forced our clocks ahead three weeks early and. brought out the primroses, daffodils and all the spring flowers including the seed that I planted in December. It sprouted and it is such a big one that I am overwhelmed by the size. I'm going to need help.
When I read that Jubilee Days was in danger of being canceled I called Dr. Hill, president of the Jubilee Days Committee to see what was going on. At that time Dr. Hill indicated that some people were burned out and they needed help.
The Fraternal Order of Eagles takes pride in people helping people. I went to the members and officers of the White Center Eagles to see if they were willing to help. We voted to help and our president assigned me as chairman to save Jubilee Days. I sent a letter to The Jubilee Days committee telling them that the White Center Eagles was willing to help. We also got a response from the North Highline council that they will do volunteer work for this event and have plans for a kid's parade. The Jubilee Days committee had a meeting to assign committee duties.
I was asked to do staging and entertainment. What I need is a stage for my karaoke contest. Sound good so far? That's only half of it. When Dr. Hill came in to the meeting he came to me with some of the contacts I will need to make Jubilee Days happen, and that he would help me that night. After that I was on my own.
Not only do I have the stage and entertainment I'm The Leader of this event. If Jubilee Days is going to happen it is up to me. On March 9, 2007 I mailed 2007 Seafair Community event renewal to Seafair Community Affairs Committee. We already had a meeting to form the committees.
Jubilee Days are alive and doing well. I'm looking forward to West Seattle HI-Yu. I will be there visiting the West Seattle Eagles.
