She will be missed for her laughter, warmth and caring personality. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to donate to the Swedish Cancer Institute for all the help they gave her.

Evelyn Tomren Nilsen

Born June 27, 1916 in Alesund, Norway. Died Feb. 25, 2007 in Seattle Wash., Ballard Swedish Hospital, after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease followed by a massive stroke. She was 90 years of age.

Evelyn is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Harold, with whom she celebrated over 65 years of marriage. Evelyn is also survived by three daughters, Patricia Bakke, Nancy Bickel, (Terry) and Beverly Hennum, (Les) six grandsons, Jason, Scott, Greg, Todd, Ryan, Troy and one granddaughter, Shelby. She also has three great-grandchildren, Braden, Madeline, Taylor, and one more due in July. She leaves behind one sister, Laurine Amundson and many friends and extended cousins.

Evelyn was a graduate of Lincoln High School in 1934 and began working for J.C. Penney in Ballard, then at Frederick and Nelson in the hosiery department and soon became a buyer. In 1937, at a friend's home in Ballard, Evelyn was introduced to Harold Nilsen and it was love at first site for both of them. They were married August 23, 1941 by Dr. H.A. Stub. In 1947 Harold purchased a grocery store of his own, after working for Safeway, and Evelyn worked beside him. Soon Patricia was born, and two years later Nancy arrived, followed by Beverly.

Besides taking care of her three daughters and working at Food Town, Evelyn was a member of Vasa Hope Lodge for over 60 years, a member of Leif Erikson Lodge, and Sons of Norway for over 50 years. She enjoyed her "Mystery Sister," a ladies club she didn't want to miss. Harold and Evelyn were part owners of Holiday House Travel Service. They formed groups and escorted friends all over the world including two charter flights to Norway, groups to China, Japan, Europe, cruises to the Caribbean, as well as many trips to Hawaii, everyone's favorite. Her family will miss her wisdom, sense of humor, and satisfying her grandkids with their appetites for her Swedish pancakes.

Evelyn's wish was to be cremated and her ashes to be scattered on Blue Ridge Beach, where her beautiful was for many years. At her request there is to be a private family gathering. Our family wishes to thank Dr. Fogerty, Amor Youngs and her staff at Magnolia Home Care for their kindness and loving care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Norse Home.
