We have all heard the old adage, "Where are the police when you need them?"
With so many drivers refusing to take responsibility for their poor driving habits from speeding, running red lights, failing to stop at posted stop signs and many other in fractions of the law, where is enforcement?
But even a worse problem is drivers not stopping at crosswalks for pedestrians.
Recent experience: Ambaum Boulevard just north of Southwest 128th Street is a crosswalk with painted markings on the pavement and overhead flashing warning lights.
A young girl maybe 10 years old was waiting to cross at this crosswalk. The car in front of me stopped and I did also, and the cars coming in the opposite direction stopped. You guessed it. The left lane of traffic did not even slow down. After at least five cars flew by, one finally stopped so this little girl could cross the street.
Another experience I had the same day but traveling in the opposite direction, again on Ambaum:
An automobile pulled out from a side street, causing the driver in front of me to slam on his brakes and of course I had to slam on my brakes too. Fortunately no cars were behind me. But this driver almost causing an accident only drove a half block then turned into his driveway.
Does common sense come into play somewhere (maybe they were on the cell phone) or is it just wish full thinking?
Answer: traffic enforcement required.
