The Explorer West Middle School Board of Trustees has elected Evan Hundley as its new Head of School.
"After 14 years teaching and coaching at University Preparatory Academy, I am eager to apply my experiences and lead this dynamic, small school," said Hundley.
In addition to independent school academics, Hundley has directed the tennis program at The Sand Point Country Club since 1989 and worked in city government administration in Seattle and Redondo Beach, Calif.
He will assume his duties at Explorer West this summer.
Hundley was among 47 applicants for the head of school position.
"After completing an extensive search process, there is no question in my mind Evan Hundley is the person we need to lead Explorer West into our second 10 years of educating middle school students," said Petyr Beck, chair of Explorer West's Board of Trustees. "He is a smart, tenacious leader who is both highly capable and excited about our students, mission, and the unique appeal of our school's environmental sustainability and outdoor education programs. I can't wait to see him in action."
His formal education includes a BA in Sociology/Environmental Studies from Whitman College and Master's of Public Administration and Master's of Urban Planning degrees from the University of Southern California. In his new position, Hundley said he plans to participate in the Pacific Northwest Association of Independent Schools' leadership training programs.
As Explorer West's new Head of School, Hundley will lead a school that has achieved national and local acclaim for its middle school program. Most recently, Explorer West was the recipient of the National Association of Independent Schools 2007 Leading Edge Award for Environmental Sustainability. Locally, the school was just awarded King County's 2007 Earth Heroes at Schools award. Explorer West is at the forefront of providing students ways to learn and experience environmental sustainability through a highly integrated curriculum including an unparalleled outdoor education program.
"Explorer West has shown that a small school can make a big impact," said Hundley. "I am excited to connect with the school community and build on the school's successes. It is important that more Seattle families learn about Explorer West's vibrant middle school program."
