Bills in the breeze

Thanks to witnesses, a quick response from officers and the nose of a police dog named Axel, a transient who robbed a credit union near 24th and Andover was quickly taken into custody on Wednesday. After demanding money from a teller, the man fled southbound, was seen trying to break into a house, and was ultimately routed from beneath some stairs at a residence on 25th SW, where officers reported seeing U.S. currency blowing in the breeze. The suspect was booked into King County Jail for investigation of robbery and on two outstanding felony warrants.
A local resident was booked into King County Jail for investigation of DUI and hit and run after he ran a red light at 35th and Fauntleroy, struck a car, and proceeded toward I-5. The victim followed and called 911, and the suspect was eventually pulled over at NE 12th and 45th NE. In the suspect's car, officers found a bottle of whiskey, a bottle of diet cola, and a number of "alcohol-enhancing" medications.
A Charlestown area man was booked into King County Jail Saturday night after a domestic violence incident that took place over the course of a day. The man allegedly assaulted his wife and held her hostage, keeping her from calling police. The next day, he pointed a rifle at her and began dragging her into the house. But she was armed and shot at him, causing a stray bullet to go through the window of a nearby home, nearly striking the resident.
After returning to his car, which had been parked under the West Seattle Bridge for a couple of hours, a man discovered that someone had gained access to the vehicle and stolen a backpack, a briefcase and work ID. Estimated loss: $3,150.
Citizens called 911 about a suspicious man standing inside the jungle gym play area at Riverview Playfield. He had been in the area about 45 minutes, holding a rope. An officer arrived and noted that the man had a distant look on his face and responded slowly to the officer's requests. The man denied that he had been drinking, but admitted that he used to take medication for mental illness, but had run out. He also said that God told him to leave his brother's house and to cancel all of his state assistance. Concerned for the man's welfare, the officer had him transported to Harborview for a 72-hour involuntary evaluation.
As officers were responding to a call near 8th S. and S. Kenyon, they noticed they were being followed by a car with its high beams illuminated. Being cautious, the officers drove on for another couple of blocks, and the car came along as well. The driver claimed he wanted to know why the officers were always in the area. He became angry and animated and complained about being unlawfully detained. The officer told him he wasn't being detained, and that they'd actually prefer that he drive away. The car was registered to a Mountlake Terrace address and the driver is well known to police in that area, who say the man has mental issues.
