Burien's popular annual Clean Sweep, which brings friends and neighbors together to clean up their city, will take place again Saturday, April 28, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Participants must register at the Burien/Normandy Park Fire Department station at Southwest 151st Street and Eighth Avenue Southwest beginning at 8 a.m.
Groups may pre-register by calling Discover Burien, which together with the city of Burien presents the event, at 206-433-2882.
Group leaders still will be required to show up at the firehouse to sign releases.
Breakfast will be available during the morning registration, including energy bars courtesy of Sportsman's Warehouse of Federal Way and juice from Highline Medical Center.
The El Dorado West Retirement Community will donate bottled water.
Participants should be prepared to perform cleanup tasks such as sweeping, weeding, planting flowers, picking up litter and removing graffiti.
While John L. Scott will donate work gloves and Highline Medical Center will supply rubber gloves, there will be a limited number of these gloves. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own work gloves plus a favorite yard-work tool, such as a rake, shovel or pruning shears.
This popular event, which draws many returning participants, gives downtown Burien a spring-cleaning. In addition, volunteers tidy up other areas of town.
To prevent duplication of efforts, groups should contact Discover Burien before the event.
Commercial enterprises in the main downtown area that wish to get rid of unwanted business items should call Debra George, who is coordinating Clean Sweep for Discover Burien, at 206-941-7199 before April 28 to arrange for pickup.
Burien Toyota is the primary business sponsor of the event.
When they finish working, volunteers can get lunch at the firehouse donated by Sal's Deli of Burien and Foodservice America.
A raffle of numerous prizes contributed by Prudential Northwest Realty will follow. The Burien Teen Leadership Council will sell "I Love Burien" t-shirts at the event.
