White Center and Boulevard Park residents get another rare chance to vote May 17.
Six of 13 seats are up for grabs on the North Highline Unincorporated Area Council at an election to be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at Mount View Elementary School.
Since White Center and Boulevard Park are not part of any city, the North Highline Unincorporated Area Council was established by King County to represent people who live in the unincorporated area. The elected council is recognized as the official liaison between North Highline residents and county government.
Among its responsibilities, the North Highline Unincorporated Area Council has been involved in the proposed annexation of North Highline to either Burien or Seattle. The council studied and compared the two options, held public forums to discuss annexation and voted to recommend joining Burien. Ultimately it will be a vote of the citizens of North Highline that decides which city to join.
For purposes of representation on the council, North Highline is divided into four geographical districts. Each district has two council members who must live in the district they represent. One council member from each of the four districts will be elected May 17.
There are also five council members who serve the community at large. Two of the five seats at large will be up for election on May 17.
All are two-year terms. Council members are expected to attend two council meetings per month.
Voters need not be registered to vote. The election is open to all residents, business owners, property owners and employees of nonprofit organizations located in North Highline.
