A worldwide "Kids Day America/International" on Saturday May 19 will feature an event at the Ballard Commons Park from noon to 3 p.m. There will be free health screenings and information on disease prevention and health promotion.
"We are very excited. It will be a great first year," said event coordinator Courtney Ruth.
The program includes hands on workshops and presentations for children on personal safety, Internet safety and health and environmental information.
The Seattle Police Department will make free identification cards for the children and a squad car will be open for tours. The Internet and Your Child Organization will give kids an Internet identification that can he helpful in an Amber Alert situation. Sergeant Leanne Shirley of the Seattle Police will conduct an Internet safety workshop.
Members of the Seattle Fire Department will bring one of their engines for people to explore. Sustainable Ballard will be there with an activity tent to do a garden and art project.
Free balloons, snacks, give-aways and prize drawings will be held every half-hour.
DaVinci's Caf/ and Bakery will offer gluten free baked goods. Kids can play on an inflatable toy and receive free balloons.
Local businesses are being invited to donate prizes for give aways, refreshments, financial contributions, hanging flyers in store windows and volunteering at during this day. Divine Spine Chiropractic Studio is sponsoring the Ballard Boys and Girls Club as part of the event.
"We have lots of businesses behind it," said Ruth.
