The Evergreen Wolverines lost two games at the West Central District III Fastpitch Tournament at Sprinker Recreation Center in Parkland Friday.
Their first loss was 9-0 to the No.1 seed, Timberline. That was not a good game to talk about. But the second one was against a good team from the Southwest District, Hudson Bay, and the Wolverines played this Vancouver, Wash. area team straight up.
"We battled," said Evergreen head coach Daylene Boehm. "It was anyone's game until the seventh."
It was 0-0 throughout the first six frames as the Eagles ace pitcher kept the Wolverines batters baffled for the most part. There were only four hits for the home team for the game and the Eagles did not have a much easier time hitting either against Wolverines sophomore Lisa Anderson. She held the Eagles to five hits in this one, no more than a hit an inning except for the seventh, where two were recorded.
To keep the game close, there were some big plays, mostly from the Wolverines who did see the Eagles get a runner to third base in the top of the third but not get home. That is because when the Eagles runner was at third base and off running with her next teammates hit of the ball, it was Wolverines shortstop Shalice West scooping up the grounder and firing to home plate where catcher, Shelby Klein, who caught the ball and applied the tag.
West made a few nice throws to nab runners going to first base, too, on grounders to the hole. Her shortstop skills kept fewer runners at first base for sure. Defense helped Anderson for sure in other ways like a hot grounder hit to third in a bases loaded situation in the sixth and third baseman Shanna Shepard fielded the ball and touched third base to get the force and end the Eagles' threat.
"I love my girls," said Anderson, only a sophomore. "They are always there for me."
