Battles shaping up in Burien council election
Tue, 06/12/2007
Two races for the Burien City Council and one for the Tukwila City Council are the only Highline-area council contests that will appear on the Aug. 21 primary election ballot.
Candidates filed for all open city, county and district offices last week.
In Burien, Councilman Gordon Shaw is seeking re-election. Former Councilman Stephen Lamphear and J. Fulop, who oppose annexation of North Highline by Burien, will challenge him.
Another annexation foe, Ron Seale, Water District 20 Commissioner Kathy Keene and Ed Dacy, a long-time council observer, will vie for the seat being vacated by first-term Councilman Jack Block Jr.
Block is challenging Port of Seattle Commissioner Bob Edwards in a six-candidate race. Wen Wu Lee, Thom McCann, The-Anh Nguyen and Gael Tarleton also hope to oust the incumbent.
Bill Bryant, Catherine J. Perkins and Stephen Symms will challenge first-term Port Commissioner Alec Fisken.
In Tukwila, Cathy Hougardy, Brian P. Kennedy and De Sean Quinn are running to succeed City Councilwoman Pam Carter, who is a candidate for mayor.
Councilman Jim Haggerton, whose term does not expire this year, in the November election, will oppose her. Mayor Steven Mullet is not seeking election to a third term.
All city and district races are non-partisan. Non-partisan races with just two candidates will appear only on the November general election ballot.
King County Councilman Dow Constantine, D-West Seattle, whose 8th District includes Burien and the North Highline Unincorporated Area, will be challenged in the Democratic Party primary by Goodspaceguy Nelson.
John Potter is the lone Republican candidate in the 8th Council District.
