Graffiti artists, "Artmobiles" and high school students modeling new clothes made from trash are just a few new scenes planned for Burien's Strawberry and Arts Festival on Friday, June 23, and Saturday, June 24.
The annual celebration will be at the Burien Community Center and Dottie Harper Park at Southwest 146th Street and Fourth Avenue South.
Colorful "Arts Parades" will include Orchestar Zirkonium, a Balkan-style "noise" orchestra and dance band; Show Brazil!, featuring costumed dancers; and the renowned Filipino Youth Drill Team.
In the Dottie Harper Park forest, FROM THE GROUND UP artists from Seattle and New York City will work with the natural environment to design a number of temporary outdoor-sculpture artworks specific to the outdoor venue.
"Brazilfest in Burien" will feature Show Brazil's dance, drum, and martial arts instructional workshops in addition to their performances.
Another new event is the 5K Festival Walk/Run, set for 9 a.m. June 24, organized by Highline High School students to benefit the Ruth Dykeman Center and WhiteWater Aquatics Swim Team.
Three stages will feature jazz, blues, Motown, world, gospel, folk, punk, and rock music. Performers range from flamenco dancers to jump rope artists.
The Kids' Stage will feature puppetry, jugglers, storytelling, and comedy.
Local performing artists also will be celebrated, including the Highline Community Band, Highline High School's Jazz Band, and dancers from New City, Momentum and Abyssinian Twins Dance Centers.
The Burien Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services with support from the Burien Arts Association, 4 Culture, Burien Library Guild, the Highline Times, the Burien Arts Commission, Moshier Arts Center, Burien Co-op Preschool, Puget Sound Occupational Skills Center, ReUse Resources, Highline High School, and White Water Aquatics present the Festival.
