As drum majors for the Ballard High School band, judges in the larger parades watch Andrew Zachary and Rachael Phelps closely.
During the Wenatchee Apple Blossom Parade last month, all eyes were on the Ballard students as they won the drum major competition against 25 other high school bands.
"As drum majors they lead the band and call up the songs. They conduct the band while we are marching on the street," said Music Teacher Michael James.
Zachary is the drum major and he is assisted by Phelps. Next year after Zachary has graduated, Phelps will inherit his position.
The drum major marches at the front and directs the band, waving his baton to keep the beat.
"Physically it is a lot more work. You are singled out. You have to be perfect and right on time," said Zachary.
As the assistant drum major, Phelps walks along the side or down the middle of the formation, calling out the songs to make everyone is in order. She admitted being nervous during the Wenatchee parade because it was her first judged competition.
The baton work is more taxing than it appears.
"Holding up your arm extended for half an hour is a lot of work," said Zachary.
"These guys have done a good job in leading the band," said James.
With a five-song repertoire, the selection includes many tunes that were written before many students were born or when they were little.
Their current set includes "Lady Madonna," by the Beatles and "Hold On, I'm Coming," by Sam and Dave.
Zachary does not mind playing older music in this modern age. He often listens to oldies' stations.
The band has the most fun during basketball games and football games in particular. The drum majors help whip the fans into a frenzy to root for their team.
"We try to psych up the crowd," said Zachary.
The Ballard High School Marching Band performed at the Syttende Mai parade in Ballard on May 17.
"It's nice to do a home parade, we get full cheering by the audience," said Zachary.
