Believe it or not some of you in West Seattle and White Center have not met her but here is your chance.
She is a purely positive powerhouse. She is president of South Seattle Community College and she is making quite a mark.
I first met her when she was a receptionist for the counselors and also was advisor to veterans. Every so often she came to Herald office to bring in a news item about the college. Her great smile and charming manner helped win instant friends here. Little did we know she was headed for greater glory.
Recently I asked her to tell us her ultimate wish and she said, "I'm living it now. I am part of an organization that helps people transform their lives for the better."
Her rise to the presidency has been chronicled in the Herald because it is a rather remarkable climb in a short time. It is a great testimonial to study, hard work and brainpower.
From a typical two-year prep school for four-year grad schools it is now one of only four (out of 34) selected in the state to offer a four-year degree by the Legislature. It is in hospitality management, preparing students for management in all facets of the hospitality industry including tourism, hotel and restaurant, casino, cruise ship, catering and travel.
There are now 20 students admitted to the program with classes beginning in September.
Jill is a graduate of Centralia College and will receive a Distinguished Alumnus Award, the school's highest honor on June 15. She will be the speaker at commencement on June 15.
