On Sunday, August 19, the Steamer Virginia V will revisit her historic central Puget Sound routes by cruising around Vashon and Maury Island.
The National Historic Landmark vessel will steam past wharves and waterfront communities where she formerly called for passengers, freight and mail.
Get an up-close view of the Point Robinson Lighthouse, the 19th century community of Chautauqua, and other historic sites on board the last of the Mosquito Fleet steamers.
Similar steam-powered boats used to stop at Three Tree Point, Redondo and other South Sound communities.
The Vashon Maury Island Heritage Association is sponsoring this event, and will present a new on-board program developed in partnership with Vashon College, highlighting local history, geology and ecology.
The cruise will begin and end at Vashon's north end passenger ferry dock, adjacent to where the ferry from Fauntleroy docks, so visitors coming from Seattle can walk on board the ferry from Fauntleroy, and then walk on board the Virginia V.
Boarding for the Virginia V cruise will begin at 12:30 p.m., and the vessel will depart promptly at 1:00 p.m.
The cruise will run until approximately 5:30 p.m. Bring your own lunch; no alcohol allowed; soft-soled shoes required.
Tickets are $75. To purchase tickets, send a check to VMIHA, Post Office Box 723, Vashon, WA, 98070 or visit the Island Heritage Museum 10105 SW Bank Road, Wednesday 1-3 or Saturday 10-1. For more information, contact Dick Gordon at (206) 463-5277 or gordons3@juno.com
