A joint effort is underway to provide low-income seniors in the Des Moines area with emergency disaster kits.
The project is a joint effort of the Des Moines Senior Services Advisory Committee, the Des Moines Activity Center, the Enhanced Public Safety Committee, and the Des Moines Police Department, with funds provided by the Des Moines Legacy Foundation.
The kits are specifically designed for emergency situations like the extended power outage the area experienced last winter.
Brenda Anders-Larson, senior outreach specialist said, "If you or someone you know is over 55 years of age and has a single household income of less than $27,250 a year and a couple income of less than $31,151, please contact the Des Moines Senior Activity Center."
People can call 206-878-1642 or email Brenda at brendaa@seniorservices.org for more information on obtaining these kits.
Items provided in the kits range from small flashlights, batteries, blankets and water to small battery operated radios.
The kits will be provided based on eligibility for as long as supplies last. They are available on Wednesday afternoons from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Des Moines Police Department, after first obtaining a coupon for redemption
