The Burke-Gilman Trail along the Ship Canal through the Fremont neighborhood will remain closed until summer 2008.
The Seattle Department of Transportation had planned to reopen the trail section over the next few weeks after it had closed Burke-Gilman Trail through Fremont for construction work on the Fremont Bridge Approach Replacement Project. The department will soon complete the majority of the construction work along the trail.
A private developer along the Ship Canal between Stone Way North and Phinney Avenue North, however, has now requested the trail remain closed until summer 2008. The developer has begun construction work in the area and needs to restrict trail access to maintain public safety.
Contractors working on the private development, known as the Lakeview Building Project, began construction work in May. The developer delayed construction to allow the Fremont Bridge Project to proceed, and minimize construction activity in the immediate area.
The city transportation department will keep the North 34th Street Burke-Gilman Trail detour in place until the Lakeview Building Project is completed.
