National battles at state tournament

AUBURN-- It was a week when only nature's rain could stop an All Star team's reign.
Federal Way National Little League unleashed its juggernaut of destruction on Sunday, July 15, to work over five opposing pitchers in a 22-5 stoppage of District 12 Selah National in five innings at Brannan Park.
In this 2007 Washington State Junior (ages 13-14) Baseball All Star tournament opening round game, FW National began its assault right off the bat in the first inning. Brian Moe hoisted a fly ball that dropped for a single in the outfield to load the bases. Mac Gridley tripled to give FWN a 3-0 lead before Selah had batted.
Federal Way National kept the hits coming for 6 runs in the second, 7 runs in the third and 6 runs in the fourth to amass a 22-1 margin before Selah National closed with a 4-run fifth, not enough to avoid an early end due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Peter Guthrie (3-for-5, double, triple and 5 runs batted in) and Adam Bolf (3-for-4, double and 4 runs knocked home) typified the entire District 10 offensive arsenal that proliferated 17 hits.
Federal Way followed the win against Selah by overwhelming District 7 Rainier 14-3 in a five inning encounter on Tuesday.
The Nationals began their assault right off the bat, again, scoring a first inning run on a Zach Jacobs single.
In the second inning, Richard Apigo doubled through the left side of the infield for one run before Peter Guthrie singled home the second run of the inning. On Apigo's hit the shortstop trying to cover second base on a hit and run play was caught out of position when Apigo slapped the ball past the infielder's right side. A Cole Meyers run-scoring ground out registered the final run of the inning as FWN led 4-0 after two complete innings.
Scoring in almost every way imaginable, District 10 stormed off to an 11-0 command and threatened to repeat its demolition of Sunday's opponent. But Rainier regrouped for a 3-run third to draw within 11-3.
That was the last drop in the bucket for District 7. Zach Jacobs doubled in two runs in the District 10 fourth inning and the Nationals added a run in the fifth while Jacobs sealed the deal with two consecutive shut out innings from the mound for a complete game victory.
For District 10, Jacobs' 3-for-3 with a double and five runs batted in led another awesome assault.
"We're set up good in the winners bracket and I've got all my pitching," said a pleased National manager Mike Barnhart. "That's what's getting us through. We didn't use anyone in the first game to make them ineligible (to pitch again) and only used one guy today. (In) the semifinals we'll be good to go."
Due to the deadly rain showers, the scheduled Thursday semifinal was rescheduled for Sunday at 4 p.m. (after press time). Barring any further delays, the state tournament will conclude on Tuesday, July 24.
