Incoming freshmen at Seattle Pacific University will be available for volunteer work in the Ballard community on September 22 as part of the school's CityQuest program.
"The main purpose is the get students involved in a service activity," said CityQuest Coordinator Jennifer Sampson.
Seattle Pacific University's CityQuest has a mission is to engage the culture and change the world. And the school is committed to do this through serving.
The program is held as part of New Student Orientation weekend for freshmen and new transfer students.
Teams of ten to forty students will be assigned to community organizations, community centers, churches and non-profit agencies to do work.
Past service projects have sent students to help senior centers and homes, the homeless, the developmentally disabled, food banks and parks. Students can do a variety of work. This includes yard work, ivy removal, painting and more.
Last year Seattle Pacific students worked at the Ballard Boys and Girls Club and the Ballard Manor, a home for seniors.
Students have also gone to places like the Fremont Public Association, Salvation Army, Food Lifeline, Union Gospel Mission an.d Northwest Harvest
"We go all over Seattle, from Shoreline to Rainier Beach," said Sampson. She expects more students to participate in CityQuest than the average of 800 in other years.
The projects put students in contact with the community and helps students learn to work together.
