Federal Way cross country teams met under intermittently soggy skies and trails Wednesday to determine the All-City champion.
Host Federal Way tangled with Thomas Jefferson and Decatur in a regular season ending South Puget Sound League North Division meet, while Todd Beamer of Federal Way and Curtis of Tacoma ran at the same time in SPSL South action.
When all of the placements and times were in comparing the four Federal Way Schools to each other, Todd Beamer captured the boys title and Thomas Jefferson took the girls.
"We thought we had a good chance at winning it, but we knew that TJ and Decatur were strong," said Beamer boys coach Scott Haines. "We did well."
Beamer was edged by Curtis in the SPSL South boys action, 28-29, but finished ahead of the three local rivals.
Decatur, meanwhile, defeated Federal Way, 16-39, and topped TJ, 26-31, in the SPSL North boys portion of the same four-team varsity race. TJ lost, 15-48, to Federal Way.
"We got a lot of boys in the top 10 -- four," Haines pointed out.
Ryan Eidsmoe of Todd Beamer took first place against Curtis with a time of 14 minutes, 25 seconds over the 2.75-mile course and Adam Lee finished fourth in 14:42. Keegan Claxton came in next in 14:55 and Jordan Hale secured seventh in 15:06.
Justin Englund of Decatur won the SPSL North portion in 14:04, with teammate Justin Helm right there in the same time for second.
Jeff Baklund of Thomas Jefferson placed third in 14:06, Brock Lintlemann of Decatur fourth in 15:00, Vitaly Pilipchuk of TJ fifth in 15:03, Jeff Brigham of TJ sixth in 15:06 and David Flores of Decatur seventh in 15:11.
The TJ Raider girls came in even stronger than the Beamer boys as far as placements.
"I felt good about the girls," said TJ head coach Paul Ruston. "Individually we had seven of the top 10, so that was really good. The girls overall ran strong."
TJ won, 19-44, over Federal Way in the SPSL North portion
and 15-50 over Decatur. Federal Way won compared to Decatur, 15-50.
Curtis was a 19-40 winner over Todd Beamer in the SPSL South portion.
The Raiders' Camryn Patrick won the SPSL North girls race in 16:45, with Jasmine Johnson of Federal Way second in 16:47.
Five Raiders followed from there.
Vanessa Benum was third in 16:53 and Cassidy Robey fourth in 16:56. Lacey Printz came in fifth in 17:30, Rosemary Angeles sixth in 17:42 and Jody Baughmann seventh in 17:54.
In the Beamer vs. Curtis portion of the race, Taylor Kartes of the Titans took fourth in 17:56, with Grace Mussa sixth in 18:04 and Elizabeth Jones seventh in 18:24.
The runners had to fight a soggy environment thanks to overnight, morning and ongoing mixed precipitation.
Heavy showers lingered on with breaks during the race, and dark ominous clouds were seen nearby.
Ruston saw the positive.
"It was a well run meet, and the weather held off pretty good," he said.
