Northwest Symphony Orchestra will mix up a caldron of fun at its family concert on Friday, Oct. 26, at Highline Performing Arts Center in Burien.
The evening's bill features performances of John Williams' music from the box office-hit movies about the boy sorcerer, music from Walt Disney's Fantasia and more.
"We're celebrating the huge importance of both classical and contemporary music in film with our concert Music at the Movies," said Northwest Symphony's music director and conductor Anthony Spain.
Harking back even to the era of live music accompaniment for films before "talkies,, symphonic music has always been important to the mood and thrill of movies.
"Watch just one minute of any film without sound and you immediately understand how important music is to the film experience," Spain said.
There are likely to be plenty of costumes on stage as well as in the audience, according to orchestra manager Morven Balmidiano, who encourages children to wear a costume depicting the movie-music theme or other favorite costume attire.
"Our first concert of every season is created especially for families and children," said Balmidiano, "and coming dressed in costume has always been a big part of that."
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at the arts center, 401 S. 152nd Street, adjacent to Highline High School.
Tickets may be purchased at the box office Friday evening, in advance from any TicketMaster retail outlet, or by calling TicketMaster at 206-292-ARTS (2787). Tickets are $10 to $14.
