Community organization Megawatt announced it's closure on Tuesday citing financial reasons. Well known in West Seattle for it's annual "Garage Sale Day" event the organization also served as a way for people in the community to connect with one another in volunteer efforts.
The following is the text of the letter sent to Megawatt members.
"After four wonderful, energizing years serving the West Seattle community, the Board Members of Megawatt are saddened to announce the closure of the organization at the conclusion of 2007. Our decision comes after many months of discussion and deliberation, and we would like to thank those of you who have provided your support and input.
We have succeeded with many things and take pride in our vision for the community and commitment to high quality service. Unfortunately, our dreams exceeded our resources, and thus we have faltered in our ability to reach a point of sustainability with the organization.
At this time of closure, Megawatt carries no debt and no assets. What we owe are many, many thanks to you, our friends and supporters, and what we take with us is the great joy of the last four years.
As this chapter of Megawatt comes to a close, the spirit of what we have done lives on. Various individuals and organizations have expressed interest in continuing in our absence, and you may very well see the West Seattle Community-wide Garage Sale Day and the Gathering of Neighbors re-emerge in 2008 and beyond.
We are proud of the work we have done. We are awed and humbled by the years of enthusiastic support. Most of all, we are thankful for a West Seattle community that has, for the last four years, opened up its collective arms and embraced the energy, the passion and the spirit of Megawatt.
With one ending comes another beginning. Join us in looking ahead to a stronger, more connected community.
Sincerely,
The Board of Directors of Megawatt
