Foster, Seattle Christian Faith rivalry relived
Wed, 01/09/2008
It used to be a Sea-Tac area rivalry.
Foster was on the Northeast side of the airport in Tukwila, while Christian Faith Center was located on the south side down International Blvd.
Not anymore.
Christian Faith has packed up and left for Federal Way, while the Bulldogs of Foster have stayed put.
But that hasn't kept them from meeting on the basketball court as they did Thursday at CFC's new hoops home in the EX3 Ron Sandwith Teen Center gymnasium just off the new 317th exit on I-5. The building is adjacent to the alternative Truman High School, with CFC''s new main building including the church on 336th street in Federal Way.
The two schools have been of a different size, with Foster two classifications larger. That factored into Thursday's 81-31 Foster win.
"We're 2B and they're a 2A school, so I guess you know," said Christian Faith Center head coach Jay Wesolek.
Even though the score of this game got away from the Eagles, Wesolek is optimistic about the move - and his team's future.
"I think it's going to be a great move for us," Wesolek said. "We enjoy the area. The reception at EX3 has been great and we appreciate it a bunch."
Foster head coach John Barbee found the game just what the doctor ordered coming off of Christmas vacation. Looming just after the game was the Nisqually League opener against Quilcene on Friday and a non-league game on Saturday against the Garfield Bulldogs.
"This was a good one coming off Christmas break," Barbee said. "We needed it to get our confidence back up. It gives everyone the chance to get off of vacation and food and get all that out of our systems."
Wesolek was impressed by what he saw of Foster.
"They're pretty good," he said. "I saw one of the games they lost that was a close one against Renton, and they're one of the top 3A teams in the state. They're a good group of guys."
Foster stormed out to a 10-0 lead against Christian Faith.
JJ Smith put the first points on the scoreboard with an outside shot with 6:58 to play in the first quarter.
Reuban Donaldson then made a pair of free throws and tapped in another two points at 5:53.
Smith scored two on the inside at the 4:06 mark and Donaldson hit from the inside again at 3:35.
Aaron Constantino of Christian Faith broke the string with a left side bank shot at 3:10 to go in the period, but Adam Chisholm and Donaldson followed with back-to-back three-point baskets to make it 16-2. The score stood at 19-6 at the end of the first quarter.
Kenny Brown opened the second half with a three-point basket for Christian Faith and Constantino followed with a pair of free throws to make it 19-11.
But Refugio Soto-Lopez of Foster answered with two straight three-pointers and teammate Peter Malath followed with back-to-back two-point baskets - and the Bulldogs were off and running again.
Donaldson emerged as the leading scorer with 26 points as Soto-Lopez scored 16 and Allen Graves eight.
Constantino led Christian Faith with 14 points.
