Rollicking good time had by all at Breeders Theater production
Mon, 01/21/2008
Now, we all know that Burien is a family-friendly type of town. It is the kind of place where good folks can raise a family and enjoy a good evening of quality, clean entertainment right in their own backyard.
So, let me assure you, that the Breeders Theater's newest show, CRAZY/NAKED, is not a risqu/, indecent piece of theater. There are absolutely NO crazy or naked people in the story... well, okay. There are no naked people.
CRAZY/NAKED is the latest silly, fun creation by TM Sell and the Breeders Theater that skewers one of our favorite subjects: local politics. Being an election year, this is a timely matter, indeed.
Tom Monroe (Luke Amundson) is a young attorney who has just arrived in town and is now working for his local political party.
Cindy Crossman (Yana Kesala) has been a party worker for many years, toiling to promote candidates for the party and ensuring their election. Now, Tom and Cindy must work together to prevent ultra right-wing state senator Patty Proud (Kelly Johnson) from getting re-elected. This proves to be a difficult task.
The only promising candidate their party has to challenge Patty is the ultra left-wing Lucinda Fielding (Teresa Widner). The party's consultant Arch Mandrill (Eric Hartley) warns them that to lose this seat in the senate is to lose majority control.
But, a left-wing nutcase is hardly the best challenger against a right-wing nutcase ... what's a party to do?
But wait. There IS one other party member who has filed for candidacy. Some guy named Wayne. Some guy who has left town to perform "charitable work" in the field of mental health. Some guy who won't be back until after the primary election is over.
Some guy that, hopefully, isn't an extreme political nutcase like Patty or Lucinda.
Wouldn't he be the perfect candidate? Is there a way to elect him WITHOUT his being here to campaign?
Without giving away any more of the story, let's just say that CRAZY/NAKED is a rollicking, good time. Combine this wonderful political send-up with a buffet of tasty hors d'oeuvres and E.B. Foote's offering of award-winning wines (which includes their Gold Medal-winning 2004 Perfect a Trois), and you've got the best entertainment deal in town.
Oh, and don't forget that Breeders Theater always offers terrific actors to make us laugh. There is not a weak link in this cast.
Yana Kesala makes her Breeders Theater debut and delivers a strong performance as the party faithful Cindy. Luke Amundson lights up the stage as the likeable Tom. If only all lawyers were this lovable!
Kelly Johnson nearly steals the show as the insanely conservative Patty, and J. Howard Boyd and Teresa Widner are fun in their multiple comic roles.
And, as Breeders Theater patrons all know, you just can't go wrong with Eric Hartley in the show.
You also won't want to miss Lucas Heath in a small, but hilarious role as Kenny. E.B. Foote makes the wine, Doug Knoop directs, TM Sell writes and Nancy Warren sings and composes.
All is right in the Breeders Theater world.
