Karly Orr, representing Ballard's New York Fashion Academy won first place in the Project Red Dress competition.
Fashion Group International presented the sold-out gala event in cooperation with Seattle Metropolitan magazine and Macy's to benefit the American Heart Association's Go Red For Women Movement.
The competition was modeled after Bravo TVs hit show Project Runway. Twelve student fashion designers from local colleges and design schools were given 16 hours to design and construct their best red dress.
The dresses were worn on the runway by models from the Seattle Model's Guild. Hair and makeup styling was provided by Gene Juarez salon.
Orr's winning design was an elegant floor-length column gown. It was made of red rayon jersey and fully lined to edge in a contrasting chocolate color. The dropped-waist straight skirt had a thigh high center-back slit. The boat-neck bodice with raised neckband and gathers was blouson in the front. The bodice back featured a long keyhole opening with a reverse drape that fell below the model's waist.
As the winner, Orr will receive a $3,000 scholarship. The gown will be shown in a window display at Macy's Downtown Seattle. The gown will be sold at auction with the proceeds going to the American Heart Association.
