The artist who serves the lady
By Jerry Robinson
Readers of this newspaper don't usually see the results of a hobby of mine that I sometimes send to an extensive e-mail list in the mornings.
Just for fun I have been making a goofy breakfast plate for Elsbeth for about a year, as a surprise she can discover when she emerges from her rising routine each day.
I am an early bird and she takes her time, plenty of it, and always comes downstairs and enters the kitchen gussied up like a debutante going to a ball, filling the kitchen with wonderful pheromones she extracts from a perfume bottle. Even though her plan for the day is just going to the bank or the post office. If she plans on weeding the garden bed she takes off her jewelry.
This does tax my imagination as I refuse to ever have a duplicate.
At first I used some props we had scattered around the house amuse it up but now I have had to buy a few trinkets.
The edibles are usually some kind of fruit or health drink, a bite of chocolate (she is addicted) rarely an egg, always a fresh flower from the garden (hard to do in winter) and usually some toast and jelly or peanut butter. Always a cup of coffee.
My reward? A chuckle and the right to watch Seahawks and Huskies and the History channel except during American Idol.
