"Only 2 percent of all Boy Scouts make it to the eagle rank," said former governor and U.S. Sen. Dan Evans as he inducted Will Mentor, 18, to the highest rank of Eagle Scout at a ceremony at Camp Long in West Seattle. Mentor, a senior at Seattle Prep High School lives in West Seattle and plans to attend The University of Puget Sound where he was drafted to play baseball for UPS next year.
Joe Mentor Sr., Will's grandfather, was a legislator in Washington State from the Kitsap area and also an Eagle Scout. During the ceremony, Will was presented with his grandfather's Eagle badge and sash, by his Aunt, Jennifer Mills and his father, Joe Mentor Jr., who worked on Capitol Hill as a legislative aide to both Evans and Sen. Henry M. "Scoop" Jackson in the 1980's.
"We are enormously proud of Will. He has worked hard for this," said his father, Mentor, Jr.
Fifty people attended the ceremony including his family, friends and members of Troop 282 in West Seattle which is noted for its focus on outdoor activities, including hiking, climbing and long distance canoe trips. To attain the eagle rank, a scout must complete a project, which is then approved by the Chief Seattle area Council. Will's Eagle Project, which he completed over the past five years, was organizing the planting of native flora to enhance the salmon habitat at the Navy's Manchester Fuel Depot in Kitsap County. He was also required to earn 21 merit badges, and serve as a senior patrol leader for Troop 282.
