TACOMA-For Kaylyn Borden, the 2008 WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington Les Schwab Tires Class 4A gymnastics meet held on February 15-16, provided a fitting conclusion to her four-year high school career.
Supported by consistent scoring from all her teammates on Friday night, the Titan senior led Todd Beamer to third place hardware in the team competition with 171.075 points at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall.
Woodinville secured its second consecutive 4A title at 180.450 points, and West Central District champion Puyallup finished second with 172.925.
Beamer's Borden tied for fifth in the all-around competition with a total score of 36.550.
WCD champion Brianne Howe of Emerald Ridge tied for the all-around championship with Sienna Viltz of Lake Washington with identical scores of 37.5.
Titan coaches were delighted by their team's season best performance and highest placing in the short history of the school.
"Everybody was healthy and all came together as a team," declared Beamer head coach Gina Mason. "Our five all-arounders were strong and supported by the rest of the team. Everyone was 'right on' and we had no falls on the beam. We stuck every routine."
Assistant coach Jessica Eisenberg also gave out high commendations for the performance.
"We scored as highly as possible," she said. "Kaylyn made the finals for the first time and qualified on three of the four individual events."
By the next morning, Borden stuck the balance beam for fourth place with a score of 9.425 besides posting an eighth place on the vault (9.275) and ninth place on the floor exercise (8.9).
"It was exciting with our team finish and I enjoyed all the craziness, including being in the finals for the first time," stated the broadly smiling and twinkle-eyed senior. "I was happy with my 'sheep jump' (signature move with a back arch) on the beam. It was fun to throw some harder moves on the floor exercise, and it was great to end this way."
Borden was also named to the seven-member All-State Senior gymnastics team.
Freshman Cassie Peterson finished ninth on the individual beam finals at 8.9 and spoke about her first state endeavors.
"This was amazing and really cool," she bubbled. "It was even more cool to be with the team."
Howe won the uneven parallel bars with 9.525 and the floor at 9.675 while posting a 9.6 score to tie Katie Bubnich for the gold on the beam. Emily Heizer of Woodinville collected the gold medal on vault by scoring 9.65.
Debbie Hunter of Thomas Jefferson was announced as Class 4A head coach of the year.
