TACOMA - Disruption of patterns and an inability to control the ball detoured the Foster Bulldogs' journey to state Friday at Henry Foss High School.
Eatonville (16-7) utilized tough inside play and turnovers to destroy Foster of Tukwila 52-34 in the Class 2A West Central District III girls basketball championship game.
The Cruisers grabbed the district No. 1 seed to the state tournament while Foster (16-7) faced Kingston on Friday after press time for the No. 2 and final district berth to the state tournament which begins today at the Tacoma Dome.
"We allowed Eatonville to take us out of our game," Bulldog coach Eric Fletcher elaborated. "When we use our post players we're successful and rebound. Tonight, we couldn't get ourselves to commit to that aspect."
Consistently delivering the ball inside for six-foot, three-inch Jasmine Horton and five-foot, 10-inch Shantel Carmichael to wreak havoc, Foster fought to an 8-8 draw after one quarter in a half court style of play predicated by the stifling full court pressure defenses by both squads.
Trailing 20-15 before freshman Zerina Kapetanovich fired home a three-point goal from the top of the key midway through the second quarter, the Bulldogs tied the score at 20-20 on Horton's layup.
Momentum abruptly changed after Cruiser guard Amanda White completed a standard three-point play after being fouled as she scored a basket on a cut to the hoop. Five more Eatonville points in succession plus a 4-0 Cruiser run to begin the second half left Foster trailing 32-20 with 6:43 left in the third quarter.
Despite its size disadvantage, Eatonville had its smaller players crashing the boards and attacking the rim constantly against Foster's big front line, earning many points inside the key. The unkindest cuts of all were delivered to the Bulldogs by Cruiser players slashing to the basket after receiving sharp passes on give-and-go plays as Eatonville built cascading leads that twice reached 19 points.
Inside play for Foster was short-circuited by bad passes or simply not holding on to the ball in a 20 turnover game story.
"It was a tale of two halves," concluded Fletcher. "In the first half we were more ready and ran through the things we did all year. The 8-0 run before halftime did for Eatonville. We never recovered."
Horton scored 13 points and snatched nine rebounds for Foster.
Leading the balanced scoring for the Cruisers was Amanda White with 14 points on slicing drives to the basket.
