Eagles launch new season with a split

Sitting by a roaring fire in the fireplace, drinking hot chocolate, taking a hot bath or taking a hot shower.
Those were the activities people were talking about at Thursday's Federal Way home track meet against Kentwood.
But there was something to be said about the meet itself.
The Eagle boys posted a 100-35 victory over the Conquerors, while the girls took a 90-49 loss in the action at Federal Way Memorial Field.
"The kids performed well under bad conditions," said Federal Way boys head coach Sam Beesley. "This is track in the Northwest."
A nasty, cold rain swept through the stadium throughout the meet, soaking everyone.
The wind was completely calm at the start, with the United States and Washington state flags hanging straight down.
Even that changed late in the meet, with the wind kicking first the United States and then the soggier Washington state flag straight out. A flock of seagulls ducked in and out of a low hanging cloud to the Northeast of the stadium, apparently waiting for any food that should be left after the meet.
But Federal Way found comfort in the lopsided boys win, with the Eagles winning 13 events out of the 16 that took place.
"Thirteen places out of 16 events, and Kentwood won three events," said Beesley, who has coached football at Thomas Jefferson and Federal Way and boys track at Federal Way, Thomas Jefferson and Decatur. "When you win 13, it's probably difficult for the other team to beat you."
Jeff Forbes led the way to victory for the Eagles, winning the 200-meter dash in a time of 23.4 seconds. Forbes also ran on the 400-meter relay team that won in 44.4 and on the 1,600 team that won in 3:45.
Gregger Highberg took the boys 110-meter high hurdles event in 15.6 and Deshawn Williams won the 1,600-meter run in 4:53.
Jaren Sio won the shot put with an effort of 36 feet, 0 inches and Willis won the 400-meter run in 55.9. Robert Shelby took the 300 hurdles in 42.0 and Andre Barrington took the long jump at 20-2 1/4. Ian Teves won the triple jump at 40-9 1/4.
Miles VanZee cleared 10-6 to win the pole vault and Andrew Pula took the discus at 128.14. Meron Simon took the 3,200-meter run in 11:28.
"Like the other Federal Way teams this year, football and basketball, we're young," said Beesley. "But we did quite well."
The Federal Way girls team coached by Jean Licari won six events.
Jacqie Evenson won the 100-meter hurdles in 16.8 and the 300 in 49.2 and she also won the long jump at 15-6 1/4.
Rachel Olivarez took the discus at 92-10 and Kara Winchell won the pole vault at 6-6.
Paulina McKenna won the triple jump at 30-9.
As for future events, the Bill Harris Invitational will once again be held at Federal Way Memorial, this year on Tuesday, April 8. Harris is a longtime coach who still helps the team out despite being retired. Only the top athletes at each school in each event participate.
