History repeats itself again.

For the fourth time in Todd Beamer High School's short five-year history, the Titan Dance Team walked away with the coveted title of State Champions.

Competing in the Hip Hop category, the Beamer Dance team bested teams from across the State in the 4A tourney in Yakima March 21.

Beamer also won the hip hop championship in 2007 as well as 2004 and 2005.

Since hip hop became a separate dance category at the WIAA tournament in 2004, the Titan dancers have taken 1st place each year but one.

Losing points for a "potential" safety hazard in 2006 bumped the team out of the top spot, which otherwise would have been their third championship in a row.

During the off season, dance competition officials refined the rules so teams would not be penalized for something that "could" happen, as was the case in the 2006 contest.

Led by Coach Joel Lindberg, the Titan team consists of 14 young women and one young man.

In his fourth year as dance coach, Lindberg, a physical education teacher, stresses precise execution, exact synchronization and teamwork.

Competing at the highest level in the state competition requires near perfect execution with all team members moving in unison.

"All of the long hours and hard work paid off this year and I couldn't have asked for a better team to be a part of my senior year," said Rochelle Razor, one of the senior team captains.

"Repeating as State Champs was our goal from the beginning," added McKenzie Goff, the other captain.

"We knew we could do it if we came together as a team and focused on our precision," she explained.

Fourteen other schools sent teams to the tourney in the hip hop category. Cross-town rivals Federal Way and Thomas Jefferson also sent teams.

Thomas Jefferson's Raiders took home the second place trophy.

Todd Beamer Dance Team finishes the season after having won 1st place at the District Tournament for the fifth straight year.

No other team has won the hip hop category at District competition since its inception five years ago.

"I'm so proud of the accomplishments our team has made this year," said Coach Lindberg.

"After such a strong finish last year, we knew we had to set high goals and expectations. Our team members have worked hard and they deserve what they have accomplished."
