In response to Gary Daum's Letter to the Editor (It's my Artwork) on April 9, I think I can help "set the record straight" regarding the sign on the front of the Alki Tavern. My name is Gill McLynne and I have owned the Alki for 32 years. Gary did paint the original sign in 1976 when I opened. After 18 years of wind and rain the sign was touched up in 1994. Mr. Daum's name and the date were not painted over. I wouldn't allow it. His name and the date 1976 is still there, covered by some window molding.
Neither Danielle Bolar nor I have ever stated that she is the original artist, nor did the West Seattle Herald in its caption below the photo in question. Danielle did an outstanding job of brightening up the seagull flying above the waves, taking great care to maintain the original theme. She deserves kudos, not unfounded accusations.
You are certainly entitled to your opinion, Mr. Daum, but perhaps you should have taken a moment to reflect on this before demanding retractions, corrections and confirmation of action taken. In truth, it is you who should apologize for your misguided, misinformed tirade. I take great pride in maintaining the character of the Alki Tavern and West Seattle.
