There was a whole lot of clock cleaning going on at Highline Memorial Stadium as Highline High School scored a 5-0 West Central District boys soccer playoff win over Sumner Tuesday, May 6.
The Pirates outgunned the Spartans, 23-1, in the first half and 12-1 in the second.
Both teams came in as No. 2 seeds from their respective leagues -- Highline from the Seamount League and Sumner from the South Puget Sound League's Class 3A division.
Senior midfielder Marshall Kosaka sparked the Pirates' offense by scoring the first two goals, and he scored one more time later in the match to complete a hat trick with three goals.
Kosaka struck first with 13:04 left in the first half, then struck again with 11:16 to go. He snuck the ball into the back right hand corner of the net for a 2-0 lead that lasted through halftime.
Highline's Mowlid Hersi scored with 37:30 remaining on the second half clock, curving the ball around the net and in.
Kosaka stepped up to the fore with one more goal, drilling the ball into the back of the net to give the Pirates a 4-0 cushion.
Jesus Cervantes scored the fifth and final goal with 15:44 to go in the match, shooting from the left side and knocking the ball into the right side of the net.
Sumner's closest shot was in the final seconds, with a 1-on-1 penalty kick opportunity hitting the post on the right side and sealing the Spartans' scoreless doom.
Both advanced to Saturday's district play however, as did both teams in the second game of the day between Seamount League champion Kennedy and SPSL Class 3A champion Auburn-Riverside.
Riverside 3, Kennedy 1
Tyson Sykes of Auburn-Riverside stunned the Lancers early in last Tuesday's playoff, launching a shot from his own 45-yard line all the way across to skim off a leaping goalie's fingertips and go in.
Kennedy did tie it right back up at 1-1 on a goal off a free kick. The shot went around the Ravens' line of defenders and past the diving goalie into the open on the right side.
Senior defender Erin Lane put Auburn-Riverside into the lead again, nailing a shot with 11 minutes left in the half.
The action calmed down in the second half, but Ravens senior defender Michael Wagmans all but wrapped things up by scoring on a free kick over the top.
That left the score at 3-1, despite Kennedy's efforts down the stretch.
