The state Class 3A boys soccer tournament opener between Highline and Hudson's Bay was heavy on the red and yellow, and even had some black and blue.
But the worst thing for Highline when all was said and done is the fact that everything was said and done for the season because of a 2-1 loss.
The Tuesday, May 13 match at Highline Stadium featured two red card ejections and six yellow card cautions from the referee. One of the red cards actually came from one person having two yellow cards.
The first yellow card was dished out only 2 minutes, 5 seconds into the match.
Hudson's Bay struck gold quickly after that.
With 35:35 remaining in the first half, Caleb Escobedo of Hudson's Bay took a free kick and headed it on in for a score.
Highline battled back to tie the score right before halftime.
The clock read 12:57 remaining before intermission when Evan Richter fed an assist to Umelo Ugwoaba, who took a right-side shot and punched it into the left side of the net and on into the back.
Coming out of the locker room at the half the coaches were called aside by the officials for a lengthy discussion about the rule book.
That was followed by a relatively peaceful portion of the match until Hudson's Bay broke the tie with 15:09 to play. Mathew Dally bounced a shot past the goalie and in, giving Hudson's Bay a 2-1 lead that lasted the rest of the way -- despite Highline's best efforts.
One yellow card on each team was followed by a corner attempt by Richter, who took a shot and was over the top with it.
Another yellow card followed, and after that came the Pirates' last charge. It almost paid off in a score, but almost was not good enough and the clock ran out.
Graduating from off this year's team are seniors Richter, Marshall Kosaka, Mowlid Hersi, Andres Suazo-Ramirez, Nick Reynolds, Ruben Rodriguez, Aaron Jacobson, Sam Reash and Nick Foutz.
