The Cities of Des Moines and Kent are holding a series of public meetings to gather the community's thoughts and ideas on what Midway could look like in the future, what kinds of businesses are needed, and what types of transportation options would support a new Midway.
Interested parties are asked to attend an open house, Wednesday, May 28, 6 to 8 p.m. at the Des Moines Activity Center, 2045 S. 216th Street.
"The Cities of Kent and Des Moines together will be reaching out to the public in an effort to find out what is needed to make Midway the best it can be," said Gloria Gould-Wessen, project lead for Envision Midway. "We want to hear from residents and businesses in the Midway area, and those who shop or travel through there.
"Everyone has something to contribute when it comes to thinking about change. No dreams are too big. We want to hear all the ideas."
The two city councils have recently defined the mission for the project, which is to transform the Midway community into a sustainable urban area that enhances commercial development and optimizes its geographic location, wide range of transportation options, educational institutions, and views.
"This is a very exciting project. Change is coming to Midway and we want to make sure that we are headed in the right direction," Gould-Wessen added
City staff will conduct follow-up public meetings in July and October. More information about the project can be found at www.envisionmidway.com, or by contacting Denise Lathrop in Des Moines, 206-870-6563.
