For those who think a car show isn't for them, the sixth annual Burien Father's Day Car show puts the pedal to the metal with nine new outside-the-box judging categories plus the first-ever Burien Chili Cook-Off.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 15, the free event in downtown Burien will also gear up with retro tunes, tasty food, and a charity raffle.
Lean mean cruisin' machines from yesterday and today will vie for trophies in the following unique categories: Mayor's Choice, Best Project Car, Under Hood Artwork, Most Likely To Go On A Date In, People's Choice, Auto Dealers' Choice, Best Paint Job, and Lowest Odometer. The vehicles will line Southwest 152nd Street between Fourth Avenue Southwest and Ambaum Boulevard Southwest in downtown Burien.
Teams competing in the Chili Cook-Off will provide samples of their potentially award-winning chili to the public from noon to 4 p.m. The first place winner receives $250 and a traveling trophy for a year, second place gets $100 and third place $50.
Event-goers can savor chili samples and sleek wheels to the sounds of the '50s and '60s between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., courtesy of a KJR-FM disk jockey. If the need to feed arises, find a quick fix at the car show's hotdog cart or nearby businesses. Some shops will also feature in-store specials.
Buy a 50/50 raffle ticket at the event to support Hospitality House, a local nonprofit organization that helps homeless women.
Car show contestants may either register in advance or on the day of the show. Preregister by returning the completed registration form and fee of $15 by Wednesday, June 11.
Participants may register on the day of the event between 8 and 10 a.m. at the registration booth at Southwest 152nd St. and Eighth Avenue Southwest and pay a fee of $20.
To compete in the cook-off, participants must register by Friday, June 13 for a $25 fee. Chili must be cooked onsite in a quantity sufficient to provide 500 samples plus tastes for the judges. The cook-off will provide each registrant with a table, propane gas burner and 500 napkins, spoons and tasting cups.
Burien Auto Row is the primary sponsor of the event, which is being presented by the Discover Burien Association. Except for raffle fees, all money collected will go toward operation of the event and Discover Burien, a nonprofit organization that works on the economic development, promotion and marketing of the city.
