I am writing regarding the story "Goats, folks to clean park" (Herald, Aug. 27). I would like to clarify several items regarding the West Seattle Gateway Clean Up Project.
The aim of the project is to clear out blackberries and other nuisance plants; trim trees, remove dead and diseased trees, remove select trees to encourage healthy growth of the better trees; trim up shrubbery; and remove all litter. City resources are not available to do all of the substantial tree work that needs to be done and therefore we are hoping to raise the $12,000 to $14,000 needed to engage a tree company (certified and licensed arborist). It's also our hope to raise the funds to cover the cost of bringing in goats to deal with the blackberries - $3,250. Whether we achieve our goal of a total cleanup is dependent on funds raised. Nonetheless, when we finish on Sept. 13, the area should look considerably better.
The Admiral Neighborhood Association and the Southwest District Council (both great organizations) are not involved in this project. The project is a combined effort of Fairmount Community Association, the City of Seattle's Clean and Green Interdepartmental Team and the Mars Hill Church (West Seattle campus), and the many wonderful people in our community who have signed on as volunteers.
