As I spend time watching Burien receive a new facelift in hopes of drawing people onto its streets and into its businesses, I have a question. Why does Burien overlook an urgent need at Moshier Field?
The athletic fields at Moshier draw hundreds of people in a year's time to various sporting events. Yet athletes and spectators alike are forced to use a facility that is filthy, unsafe and deteriorating, with sinks and a drinking fountain that are not working. The toilets are archaic and need to be replaced.
Should we not be showing the people from this area and surrounding communities who use the fields that Burien takes pride in its athletic fields, not just downtown Burien? The Burien Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department says this facility is low on the priority list and too costly to consider right now. The Burien City Council has been made aware of these concerns.
As an attendee of many sports events in our community and others, I have observed that Burien has, by far, the worst bathroom facilities for use by athletes and spectators. My hope is that, as we will celebrate Burien's new look, we will not forget the need at Moshier Field.
