Anticipation is building in the Waterland community as volunteers continue to plan a year of festivities that will celebrate Des Moines' 50th anniversary as an incorporated city in 2009.
A full calendar of activities promises to involve residents of all ages, from young people to seniors who lived in Des Moines before it become a city. These range from a black-tie event that will begin the city's golden year to mid-summer fun, including the return of a parade to downtown Des Moines.
Volunteers gathered at the community center Sept. 6 to hear updates on the planning process from the 50th Birthday Steering Committee and to begin finalizing details of the multi-event celebration.
A black-tie dinner with featured entertainment, tentatively planned for sometime in January, will kick off the festivities. A special 50th anniversary logo may be unveiled that evening.
On June 17, the actual date of incorporation in 1959, a large birthday cake will mark the occasion. This event may be held at the historic Odd Fellows Hall, and feature special speakers and historical displays.
An expanded fireworks display will follow an equally expanded program of activities at the marina and Beach Park on the Fourth of July, including music, arts and crafts, youth events, a beer and wine garden, and the weekly Des Moines Waterfront Farmers Market.
Summer fun will continue with a 50's theme the weekend of July 22-23. A parade through downtown Des Moines will be the featured attraction. A lighted boat parade will get things underway that Friday evening.
This summer weekend celebration may include 50's music, a sock hop, 50's movies, extreme sports competitions for young people, boat races, and music, dance and cultural stages.
In addition to seeking corporate sponsorships, the city council is expected to consider granting funds to help finance the 50th anniversary observances.
The first anniversary event, although not sponsored by the city, is the Des Moines Legacy Foundation's ninth annual Bayside Brunch on Sunday, Nov. 9. The theme is "Fabulous 50!"
