Living Nativity returns to church
Mon, 12/01/2008
It's back! Highline Christian Church is about to be transformed into "Bethlehem," as in the lyrics, "Oh little town of Bethlehem...."
The church will soon unwrap and present its gift to the Highline area.
No peeking though, until Dec. 12 and Dec. 13, for these are the dates of the annual Outdoor Living Nativity.
Due to the expansion and construction of the new church sanctuary, the living nativity was not presented last year. In 2006, it was held amid construction.
Volunteers began signing up at church in October.
Much thought was given to who would portray Mary, Joseph, the Inn Keeper, the Inn Keeper's wife, the lead Angel and other Angels, Shepherds, Kings, Gift Bearers, the Stable Boy, and the traveling family which consists of Mom, Dad and young children from ages 4-8.
There was excitement among the congregation as they pondered where they would find just the right baby for the manger. Children excitedly asked if the live animals will be there.
Of course it will not be complete without the hot chocolate that is continuously served, fresh from the kitchen.
Pastor Tim Knight extends a warm, personal welcome to all communities and congregations.
"Highline Christian Church's Outdoor Living Nativity is our gift to the community," he said. "We want to invite one and all to come and witness the story of Christmas unfold in our parking lot in the middle of Burien.
"The true message of Christmas so easily gets lost in the frantic peace of the season. In the midst of the present buying, tree decorating, and party attending- come and remember what it's all about.
"For twenty minutes you will be taken back 2000 years ago to a tiny forgotten town. There, a baby will be born, the sky will light up and the angels will sing.
"Why all the commotion for a simple birth? Christmas is the coming of God into our world in the person of Jesus. Come and see God entering our messy world, full of pain and problems and literally loving us to death.
"Come and hear the familiar Christmas songs that remind you of the message of hope and joy. Come smell the hay and the animals as we recall the simple, humble birth of our Savior.
"We hope the Outdoor Living Nativity will help anchor your Christmas schedule and clear away the distractions that so easily crowd out the true message of the holiday. May you leave knowing God loves you and no matter how hard life gets,
"He is always reaching out to you with the good news of Jesus."
Annette De Leest is the producer of the nativity.
She remembers when the idea was implemented in 1994.
"It was well accepted when it first started," De Leest said.
The sets had to be constructed and money was scarce. Local businesses contributed paint, lumber, nails, and electrical items for the sound equipment.
She says it is important to note that the event requires the participation and support of many people and businesses.
She adds, "It is not just the church doing this."
Through the years, people have come from Whidbey Island, the north Seattle area, and other distant locations.
De Leest noted, "It rapidly became a tradition for families. It is a good Christmas, family activity,"
Children have always enjoyed seeing the calves, sheep, small goats and donkeys that have been a part of past events. A large part of the fun for all is getting closer and visiting with the animals after the presentation.
The nativity will be presented starting at 7 p.m. on Dec 12, with showings every half hour. On Dec. 13, presentations begin at 6:30 pm with showings every half hour.
The last performance on both evenings begins at 8:30 pm.
The church is located at 14859 1st Ave. S. in Burien. For more info, call 206-243-4333.
