The Seattle Public Library and Ballard High School will make history this month by helping all of the school's students get library cards. The school's goal is for every student to have a working library card by Friday, Dec. 5.
Since Friday, Nov. 21, students have been streaming into locations of The Seattle Public Library to receive their cards and on Friday, Dec. 5, Library staff members will be at Ballard High School from 8:20 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. to count all the cards and provide applications to people who do not have cards.
"This is totally uncharted territory for them and for The Seattle Public Library," said Lynn Miller, librarian at the Ballard Branch. "Getting these library cards and becoming patrons could help contribute to the students'success now at school and through their entire lives. A lot of students and teachers don't know about all of the wonderful resources available to them at the Library."
Staff members will also show students how to use their library card numbers to log on to the library Web site and use online library resources at computers outside the library.
The project is a collaboration between Miller and the Ballard High School librarian, Debbie Arthur. Miller makes annual visits to Seattle high schools to provide freshmen with library cards, and Arthur suggested providing cards to all of the students.
The project was funded by a $500 grant from the Friends of The Seattle Public Library.
